2024 Award Honorees

Washington Organization of the Year | Mujer al Volante

The Washington State Leadership Board (WSLB) has announced that this year’s Washington Organization of the Year award will be presented to Mujer al Volante. A non-profit organization established in 2013, Mujer al Volante focuses on empowering low-income immigrant, refugee, and asylee women and mothers to take control of their lives through driving education. The organization provides a comprehensive driving education program available in multiple languages, addressing barriers related to transportation and mobility. This initiative plays a crucial role in helping these women access employment opportunities and foster economic development.

In addition to driving education, Mujer al Volante offers a variety of programs including Driving the Computer, Driving My Finances, Driving the Democracy, and Driving My Business. These programs equip women with essential skills necessary for personal and professional advancement. Mujer al Volante serves women from various counties throughout Washington State, promoting independence and creating pathways to opportunities for both women and their families. The team is composed of individuals who often share similar lived experiences with those they assist, creating a supportive environment built on trust and understanding. Since its inception, Mujer al Volante has successfully aided over 1,400 women in obtaining their driver’s licenses, which are vital for independence and mobility within their communities.

Executive Director of Mujer al Volante Jaqueline García Castillo shares:

“We accept this recognition on behalf of the mothers we serve, to make visible their fight, as many raise their families alone. They are our inspiration and strength.

When I founded Mujer al Volante in 2013, I didn’t have a driver’s license. I was low-income and experiencing domestic violence. These experiences led me to develop this organization to support mothers like me.Eleven years later, we are proud to offer our program in multiple languages, including Spanish, Dari, Pashto, Ukrainian, Arabic, Kurdish, French, and soon Somali. We are continuously expanding the program to meet the linguistic needs of the women we serve.

This organization began without any formal funding or resources but with two main pillars: creativity and empathy. Today, Mujer al Volante is a unique, nationwide nonprofit with a driving education program specifically designed for mothers and women, breaking barriers and creating opportunities for independence and growth.

In 2024, we are proud to celebrate that more than 120 women have obtained their driver’s licenses this year—a testament to the resilience and determination of the women we serve and the impact of our programs."

Washingtonian of the Year | Yasmin Trudeau

The WSLB proudly announces Senator Yasmin Trudeau as this year’s Washingtonian of the Year! Representing Washington’s 27th Legislative District, she serves as Vice-Chair of the Senate Ways & Means Committee, Vice-Chair of the Law & Justice Committee, and Chair of the Senate Members of Color Caucus. Appointed to the Senate in 2021 and elected for a full term in 2022, Yasmin is the first woman of color to represent her district.

Her dedication to equitable public policy is rooted in her personal experiences. Before her Senate role, she directed Legislative and Tribal Affairs at the WA Attorney General’s Office, advancing key legislation on student loan support and youth solitary confinement. Yasmin's journey through poverty, the foster care system, and housing insecurity has shaped her commitment to prioritizing people over politics.

When offered to comment, Senator Trudeau stated:

We are in a divided and difficult time in our country and our state. I take this call to action very seriously, as the public is demanding sustainable and comprehensive solutions to complex problems. This is why I see my call to leadership as a commitment to call out issues impacting the people I serve, while also calling in everyone able and willing to craft solutions that move us forward together. I believe that the public has entrusted all elected leaders to center their very real voices and interests. I am so grateful for this recognition and the opportunity to do exactly that for the people I have the honor of serving.

Congratulations, Senator Yasmin Trudeau! Your profound influence on the community is nothing short of astonishing, inspiring change and uplifting those around you.
